In my experience, I've found that in gay culture, a bear is often referred to as a larger and hairier man who exudes rugged masculinity. As someone who enjoys drawing, I often use my sketches as studies for watercolors and oil paintings, which allows me to experiment with different elements like mark making and shading, as well as work on the composition and subject matter.

One of my favorite subjects to draw and paint are portraits, which stems from my childhood days when my junior high school teacher spent time with me after class teaching me the proportions and individual features of the face. From then on, I spent a great deal of time drawing faces from magazines and photo books. As I got older and learned the fundamentals of figure drawing and painting.

In particular, I enjoy doing character studies of interesting faces and figures, as I believe there isn't enough art that celebrates the beauty of the human being at later stages in life. This is especially true in the gay community, where men are often excluded or marginalized as they age, due to the emphasis on celebrating young, muscular bodies like the twink.

With this drawing, I aimed to create a sympathetic and even erotic portrait of a middle-aged man, almost like a "genre scene" which depicts everyday life and experience. I use lithographic crayons to draw on Rives BFK, a heavy cotton printmaking paper that ensures stability and permanence, and won't degrade over time. This makes it ideal for framing behind glass and preserving the color for at least fifty to one hundred years without fading.
