I painted "Valerie in Her Favorite Gray Sweatshirt" in 1995 while I was in graduate school at the University of Cincinnati. It was a rough period financially. I was juggling my art history thesis, trying to learn how to paint, and figuring out how to afford materials on a student budget.
To save money, I used Luan plywood panels instead of canvas. I’d sketch out sizes and bring them to the local lumber yard to get cut. About half the time they’d get it right—this panel is one of the better ones. If you look closely, it still has some newspaper residue on the back from when I was gessoing it on the kitchen table.

I've been going through old work lately and releasing some pieces that have been in storage for decades. This one’s part of that batch—early pieces from when I was still figuring things out. It’s a simple moment, painted with what I had on hand, and it’s held up pretty well.
